Things in Jars
by Jess Kidd
I really adored this book. I loved Bridie as a main character and was happy to see a tough, likable female protagonist rather than someone who was just obnoxious. Ruby was also well done and pleasant to see a tough guy who actually has feelings and decency. I thought Jess Kidd wrote her characters very, very well.
I thought of rating this as a 4 because there were a few things that bothered me. But, I just felt so sad when I approached the end of the book and I couldn't bring myself to give this anything less than a 5. I enjoyed it so much despite some flaws.
What I didn't like was the relationship between Bridie and Ruby. Well, I loved that actually. I didn't like how suddenly it came to be. Their feelings just appeared with little explanation. I did predict that we'd find out why once we knew more about their history, but still. There could have been something in one of their minds about how these feelings are so strong even though they aren't sure why. That would have helped.
I was also really sad about how little we learned about Ruby and Bridie's history. It was sweet, but I wanted more. It left a lot unanswered and felt like just a glimpse.
I started this story through audiobook, which I loved. About halfway through, I started alternating between audio and e-book. While reading it myself, I found that I got a little bored. When listening, I didn't notice quite how much detail and explanation there was, which I don't typically like. The narrator was wonderful but when I read it, parts definitely dragged a bit.
I would have liked a bit more character development. I know mysteries rely on the plot but, again, there was a lot of descriptive parts that could have been used to deepen our familiarity with characters like Cora or Rose or even Mrs. Bibby - who I really ended up liking!
But, I really loved this book and I look forward to reading more from Jess Kidd!
