The Valley of Fear by Arthur Conan Doyle
4.0

In the same vein as A Study in Scarlet, this novel has two parts--the first being the crime/mystery itself, and the second being backstory. In this case, the backstory was far, far more interesting than that of A Study in Scarlet, but the mystery of ASiS was a little better than this one was. Still, a great and well-written story as is always expected from Doyle.
