Off the Rails by Christopher Fowler
4.0
Cumbria Library service has teamed up with an audiobooks publisher to allow members to download audiobooks for 21 days. This was my first attempt, and despite taking about three days to download (we got our broadband tweaked and hey presto, it downloaded), I got there. I decided on this on a whim. I've not read any Christopher Fowler before and liked the names. I then googled Christopher Fowler and found an interesting article http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/books/features/a-very-odd-crime-unit-414511.html about how we created the series.
I really enjoyed the book, despite not catching all of the story due to problems listening to it on my ipod. I would happily reread it in paper format. Arthur Bryant and John May are both well-drawn characters and the setting of the novel, the London Underground gave the story an eerie and interesting backdrop.
Flash mobs, silver skewers, card tricks and impending closure of the Peculiar Crimes Unit (where Bryant and May are based) are all elements to this great detective story.
