Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett
3.0

May 2018: Re-read #1. Interesting to re-read after 10+ years.

It starts as a story of women disguising themselves as men simply to fight in the army, and ends up a story about fighting against what men do to women. Overall, it's a satire of every war story cliche imaginable (a tiny country fighting all their neighbors, freezing winters in wartime, younger sibling who wants to find/save brother, a girl who's looking for the soldier father of her child, a girl who needs to lead the army 'cause god told her too, and even Vietnam flashbacks).

It's good and an interesting look at women fighting against the small space allowed to women, but it drags in places and the ending feels protracted. For anyone else, this would be a great novel, but for Pratchett, it doesn't feel as great as it could be.
