Dare Me by Megan Abbott

5.0

1) the girls aren't okay.

2) i can't resist broken, complicated friendships.

this book is centered around characters who are young and in so many ways damaged, and they hurt each other because that's all they know how to do. it's such a crystal clear depiction of girls at in age where every emotion is raw and overwhelming and every slight feels like some intense betrayal.

if you can't relate, then i guess you're normal.

i do think many of the conflicts are overdramatized, but they're rooted in what's real, in rivalries and jealousies that are inescapable because society tells women they're meant to be in constant competition with each other.

and here's where that frou frou song always plays in my head, and all i hear is there's beauty in the breakdown.
