The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino

5.0

“Sometimes, all you had to do was exist in order to be someone's saviour.”
When I read this particular quote, I just burst into tears and couldn't continue reading. I had to take a moment to digest everything that led up to this point. I was heartbroken and I loved it.

With that said, this book turned out to be a surprising gem and is faceted with wit, anticipation, and a cleverly laid out plan. I was really blindsided and I enjoyed how I rooted for the "murderer" here. It was a conflicting experience but it really shows how the characters are meticulously shaped for the readers. Some readers might be discouraged at first that the murder was already "spoiled" in the beginning but the twists that sprung up later on was the showstealer.

I've cried so hard by the last chapters and I really felt such immense grief and awe while reading this. It's safe to say that this is one of my most favorite murder mystery today. And one of the memorable books for this 2020.
