Kindred by Octavia E. Butler

5.0

I feel like someone asked Octavia Butler “If you could pick a time period to be born in, what would you choose?” And Octavia just threw a black history textbook at them.

This book was so stressful. Obviously, I know slavery is terrible but in some ways I guess I had become desensitized in a way towards it. Butler illustrates the horror of slavery in a way that cut me down to my core. I really don’t even have the words to describe how good this was. And that’s why I gave it 5 stars.

Also it is ridiculous that this is the first SFF book written and published by a black woman. It was amazing but it makes me sad to think of all the WOC SFF writers that never got to share their stories. I’m glad Octavia Butler at least got to share hers.
