Christmas Sugar by Melanie Moreland

I think the idea for the plot was good. Hotshot businessman Dylan, who has little outside his work life, falls in love with the big-hearted single mom, Alexis, who has a tragic past. Dylan coming in to purchase the Inn where she lived and worked, essentially leaving her with nothing, but falling in love with her instead is a pretty cute setup.

Unfortunately, the storytelling just didn't deliver like I'd hoped. I knew it was going to be insta-lovey based on the series title, but I really wish there had been a bit more relationship building here. Dylan is immediately attracted to Alexis the first time they meet, and then his feelings about her flip-flop several times after angry confrontations. Then, without warning or build up, he's kissing her in the lobby.

The pair quickly start banging like bunnies, and the dirty talk is just crazy awkward. Dylan is definitely not a sexy dirty talker. More cringe than hot. And Alexis switching from super goody two-shoes sweet to a cursing blow-job queen and sex goddess was just a bit too much. And don't even get me started on how Dylan's pet name for her was "My darling girl".

And oddly, despite rushing through any relationship building, the author padded the back end of the book with a bunch of extra epilogue-like chapters that really did nothing for the story. The weird backstory of Alexis being attacked in the city that's mentioned and then nothing related to it occurs. The trip to Toronto where she complains about Dylan being his old, cold self at work, but still warm and loving with the family at home. The unnecessary debate over whether to move to the bluff or not.

Meh, not great.
