having trouble rating this one.
i really enjoyed this story as it was one i had never considered ((the role of women in wars, and the traumas they endure)) which is embarrassing to admit, (however i have never given much thought to war to begin with so that’s neither here nor there,,,,,anyways i digress)
i felt so terrible for frankie both while she was in country and back at home, and the way she was treated upon her arrival was heartbreaking to listen to her experience. and it’s even worse to think about alll the women (and men of course) who were treated so awfullly on their return from service in vietnam. i loved her dynamic with her girlies. i loved ethel and barb so much that is gang that is famiglia they deserve all the stars and the moon for the way they were so patient with frankie during war as well as back in america. frankie’s return was rough to go through pretty much at every point except when she was in a country/farm setting. (real)
watching her spiral while she was home i wanted to rip my hair out, her entire family needs therapy, RI needs therapy for the way he treated her both in country and in the US. that was RAF. i’m just rambling at this point.
enjoyed the last chapter a lot. i liked tying up the loose ends and her dad finally acknowledging her service (don’t even get me started on him), and it was cutie to see
the reason why i feel trouble rating it is that it felt so one sided. we only read one experience. not every woman who served had a return home experience like frankie. the book is titled the women for a reason, and i wish we would have expounded on the point that the author Herself brought up while frankie was in therapy. PTSD is different for everyone, and i wish we would have gotten Barbs pov or ethel’s pov or even one of her commanding nurses when she was in country.
much to consider
also apologies if none of this makes sense this is sooooo stream of consciousness it’s nearly 3am ♥️
