I really liked this novel. It was very well written.
Eden, Kentucky felt like a real place. A small town full of secrets (open and otherwise) where most people deliberately choose to look away at the hard things (which to be fair, is definitely not something limited to small towns).
Opal, Jasper and Arthur feel like fully realized people, as does Starling House (which is more of a genius loci). The way Opal's life is shaped by poverty and her narrow focus also feels very real. As does her occasional willful blindness.
I loved the book right up until the end, which didn't feel as strong to me, although I'm having trouble articulating why.
