i felt that the translation convoluted my understanding of certain parts of this book but it also made sense in a way because i could easily infer/sense the cultural differences between the author’s world and my own and that was actually really cool!
story-wise, i really enjoyed what each character’s relationship to the mc had to say about the types of lives and relationships queer people experience. i liked that their stories are so strongly intertwined with each other and their fates inextricably connected. honestly really tragic throughout and that ending… geez. not the most hopeful of stories but it’s honest and real. was a very satisfying and needed read for me! interesting characters for sure. doesn’t sugarcoat anything and that’s a good thing.
also really interesting for me to read a queer account taking place in the 70s/80s. it was really a different world (even if it doesn’t feel that way sometimes) and as a result people’s relationship with themselves and their queerness have changed bit by bit with each generation. thank u to the librarian who put this on the pride month shelf :)
