King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo

4.0

* A very low 4 star read, but 4 stars nonetheless. I was expecting so much from this book and... it sadly did not deliver on a lot of fronts. At times I felt disconnected from the characters and lack of plot which sucks because I adore these characters and it was hard for me to realise that I wasn’t enjoying reading them as much as I did in their original books.

That being said, whilst I felt disconnected at times, overall I was so happy to see some of my favourite Grishaverse characters be expanded upon. It was so nice to read from Nikolai and Zoya’s perspectives finally, and even more so enjoyable to read more about my baby Nina (I cried in that whole chapter about 130 pages in I think it was... literally sobbing...). I loved seeing Zoya and Nikolai’s relationship develop and I was even more obsessed with Nina and Hanne’s dynamic and I’m so excited to see a sapphic romance in a Leigh Bardugo book.

I think my main critique about this book is that even though in book 2 I know they will intersect, the plotlines between Nina and Nikolai/Zoya felt so separate from each other. It was like I was reading two different books. I don’t know ahhhhh...

Despite everything, one thing is for certain: that ending thoughhhhh
