lilscarlet15 's review for:
The Nightingale
by Kristin Hannah
It was okay. I feel liked I’ll be yelled at for saying that.
After so many rave reviews, I thought I would give it a try. First, the writing was mediocre. There were parts of the book that should have been gut wrenching and instead, I rolled my eyes and laughed at the poor dialogue. Second, many of the characters felt one dimensional and predictable. Vienne was perhaps the most complex of them all. Third, I strongly question a lot of the historical pieces she weaved in based on my own knowledge of WWII which I like to believe is fairly educated. it just felt full of cliches and melodrama, that I was relieved when it ended. Speaking of the ending, I will say that it was beautifully done. Absolutely the best part of the book. It’s like Hannah tricks you in forgetting some of the weaker parts in the middle.
The story was good and I can see why people enjoy it. I’m just a person who can’t fully enjoy a story if the characters and the writing can’t prop it up. I’m a little hesitant to read more Kristen Hannah.
