this is one of the best books i've ever read, but it was absolutely not enjoyable. i feel sick to my stomach. it was as graphically horrifying as everyone says, but for once i think this is justified. i dislike when graphic violence and sexual assault is used purely for shock value; in this case i actually think the graphic content was necessary to kuang's purpose of illustrating horrific consequences of war and forcing western audiences to learn about the nanjing massacre. having said that, i will never read this book again
