REVIEW

I haven't had the opportunity to read any books that surround cult life, and especially not in YA fiction, but it is an area that myself and my sister have had some interest in reading about in news articles. Seed is a cult that worships mother nature and is lead by Papa S, who is to be believed as a messenger of mother nature. Seed is unlike any book I have read, told from the point of view of Pearl a fifteen year old girl who at the beginning of the book by starts her period -- something she is not aware that happens to girls as she believes she is about to die.

I must admit this book made me feel so uncomfortable yet it was really interesting from a physiological point of view. We have to witness a fifteen year old go through changes that now make her a women and more noticeable to the men and have thoughts and feelings that their leader Papa S brainwashes them to believe are wrong and sinful. The book is written incredibly well that all I wanted to do was turn the page, the actions of some of the more older characters were undoubtedly wrong but as the younger children were born into the life they see no fault in the choices or actions of the others just as long as Papa S says agrees.

Overall if you're after a contemporary novel that has the feeling of a fantasy novel then Seed is for you.

The Cover

The colours really do paint a glorious and euphoric light on Seed, yet the faint text is very evident to the fact there is a much more sinister side. Very striking and has a great impact to anyone passing by it on a shelf.

QUOTE

"You don't need healing. You're not dying, Pearl. You are fifteen years old and you're changing from a child to a woman."

Have you read Seed, or any other books surrounding cult life?
