Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson
4.0
*4.5? this was fun!
maybe i would have enjoyed it even more if i read it in winter, snuggled up in a warm blanket with a mug of hot chocolate, because the first days of spring are maybe not the ideal moment for snow storms and ski resorts.
the mystery was interesting and had lots of twists, without too many theories which are then all proven wrong (i hate that, i prefer it so much when the detective untangles everything bit by bit so i can keep up, like here).
the characters were interesting and i had no problem knowing who was who. i'm glad ern and erin didn't get back together, but i did love their dynamic.
the very last twist with the punctuation was so cool, but i wanted more detail! i think it should have been a little earlier and we should've learned why her father killed her.
it was a wild ride and at times not quite believable, but very fun. the whole jeremy thing was maybe the most extravagant and a bit much, but also i like me a nice little quid pro quo (is that what it's called? i dunno, but my 6 years of latin must've had some merrit, right?)
i loved the meta fiction aspect and although i'd agree with some other reviewers that it was at times overdone and a little too clever, it was also loads of fun! although i'm not quite sure the title was done perfect justice, it still was very interesting to figure it all out. i'm very much looking forward to the next one!
what i didn't like were a) the way the audiobook narrator pronounced the word assume (ashume??? wth?!) which made it blatently obvious that this particular word embelished every second sentence and b) (much more serious) the use of a racial slur against inuit. this also clashed hardly with the narrators oh so progressive and feminist attitude.
i noticed that this was my very first aussie audiobook and i liked it a lot! (apart from "ashuuuuume", seriously, what's wrong with these people??!)
EDIT: where is henry mctavish's 1 star goodreads review that is mentioned in the sequel tho??? that would have made the whole thing reaaaally meta :)
