Blood of the Earth
by Faith Hunter
I think I once started this and didn't continue, for no justified reason.
I'm glad I rediscovered it. This is set within Jane Yellowrock's universe, but is not centred on vampires. I don't like reading about vampires, so it works out very well.
The main character's powers are unique. I've never read anything like it. This first novel is particularly good because it focuses on her relationship with the cult church she was born into and narrowly escaped, as well as the family she left behind within it. The later entries in this series read more like police/crime/procedurals and can be monotonous or exhausting. This is also less grotesque. There is violence but it isn't drawn out.
All in all, it's very intriguing and new in many ways to me. I've been binging urban fantasy as a genre, and this one really stands out as one of the greats.
