This Wicked Fate
by Kalynn Bayron
Phew, what a duology. Though THIS WICKED FATE was kind of a letdown, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Bri and her family.
The Good: Bayron’s writing holds up well for this story. It’s light and captivating, and is well-suited to both the dark nature of these books, and also the humour she inserts in some scenes. Her characters are really well-rounded, with huge personalities, and the supporting cast really feels integrated into the story, instead of just some random people who happen to be there while things go down. Also, I love Marie as a character and I would definitely read a whole book about her cussing people out and threatening them.
The Meh: I knew how this book was going to end maybe 2? 3? chapters in. I don’t have a problem with knowing the ending and still reading, as long as the story is entertaining, or there are twists to look out for. But THIS WICKED FATE was, dare I say, kind of boring? I knew Bayron was going to play it safe with our beloved cast so I wasn’t actually worried for anyone.
Plus, the world building, which seemed promising in THIS POISON HEART, didn’t really hold up. I was expecting the world to expand - or explode, but it only ever stretched a tiny bit. THIS WICKED FATE left me with more questions than answers about this world - and not in the good way, where I want to read fanfiction to soothe the itch.
The plot wasn’t that great. It did have a goal, but there seemed to be random side things coming in, which made me lose track of what Bri’s team was actually trying to do.
The romance is also not something I can get behind, as it usually is with immortal x underage mortal romances.

Overall, it was a predictable, safe ending to an adventurous story. Kind of a letdown, but still a fun read.
