Howards End by E.M. Forster
4.0

Again...a book I should have read long ago. Eddie Izzard has said of British filmmaking that it is rather subtle and subdued with dialogue that consists of:

"What are you doing, Sebastian?"
"I'm arranging matchsticks."
"Oh. Well, I guess I'd better go."
"Yes, I think you better had."

So, as I'm reading this book and thinking about the fact that it was made into an Academy Award winning movie, I could not get that bit out of my head. My partner asked, "How's the book?" I said, "They're arranging matchsticks." She got the joke. That is why we are married.

But, it is subtle and subdued and beautifully written with a supernatural tone to it that is haunting and smacks of universal truths. Therefore, I was hooked and found it compelling. I was musing about the truth in subtlety when the story changed tone. They were no longer arranging matchsticks but setting them on fire. This happens in the last third of the book and although it is a change in tone, it complements the whole work. Forster uses a musical metaphor for life in the book and the book itself plays like a symphony, slowly building, cascading, and winding on down into complacency.

So, in closing, I liked it.
