Skyward by Brandon Sanderson

3.0

What started out as a bit over the top teenagers being teenagers adventure became some serious coming of age character development. While the MC is always a bit over the top everyone felt real in the second half after just seeming like caricatures in the first half and that's some amazing progression and personality. Death has consequence and the trauma is shown in the surivors as well as the need to rise above what others think of someone. The setting and premise are sufficiently twisted upside down at the end as our chosen girl saves the day and gets to show off to the comically against her admiral of her military station.

And in true Sanderson fashion the bad guys are described as crab like, much like on roshar, everything is a crab, crab is life.
