I picked this up because it is a selection for the Literally Dead Book Club.
“The Inheritance” is a novel that follows several members of a very successful and wealthy family as they come together to learn what they have inherited. The Agarwals have all gathered on a luxury private island to hear Raj’s, succession plan for his multimillion dollar company. His wife and three children have no idea what the next few days will have in store and who will inherit what, but there might be some deadly consequences if they do not agree and support the family.
This book did not feel like a mystery or a thriller to me, but rather a story that is rife with family drama. There is a slight mystery revolving around something that happened when the siblings were children, but for the most part the novel just felt like rich people fighting over who gets what. There is definitely a lot of family drama and a lot of trauma to unpack amongst the group. Each sibling has their own issues because of the family and they all resent the family because of it.
There is a big event at the end that I semi saw coming. I knew with all that money on the line, there would be some sort of catalyst that would cause an explosive argument amongst the family. I did not however anticipate who it would involve, so that was an interesting surprise for me.
I did enjoy how flawed all of the characters were. Each sibling had their issue as well as their redeeming quality, so it made it easy to root for all of them in a way. I didn’t necessarily want one sibling over the others to receive more inheritance.
If you like rich people behaving badly and a ton of family drama, then I recommend this novel.
