I enjoyed the worldbuilding and the inspiration from the arabic world. The 1800s Kairo was well done and I enjoyed Nahir in the real world, her preserverance and what she did to survive. The story reminded me of 1001 nights at times. I also enjoyed her travel with Dava.
When we enter Davabad the story lost me. There is a lot of reliance on tropes and my least favourite trope of all: The love triangle. Most of the stories plot could have been cut if the characters just talked to each other!
Also the conflict between the races still feels a little shallow to me.
I will start the next book, but only because it's a library book and then see from there.
