Sometimes, when a piece of media has a reputation of being good, it turns out to actually be good. I shouldn't still be so surprised by this but I am! This was a fun and tense novel of loyalties and gang warfare. I've been repeatedly told that each book in the series is a little different in what it's trying to be, and I look forward to how this situation evolves over time.

I was a little annoyed by the lack of female characters and how long it takes before any of them are allowed to actually do anything. There's one in particular I feel was very underutilized, and I'm glad this is a series so I can hope to see more of her in the next book.  The more I think about it, the more it bothers me how some things shook out. (There's a plotline I'm thinking of in particular that was given a lot of pages that just... disappears by the end of the story.) Great start to a series and I'm eager to continue, but as a self-contained book I keep picking at it.
