Batgirl Vol. 5: Deadline (the New 52) by Gail Simone

3.0

This volume is a mess of a story. I love much of Simone's work but after reading the last volume and then this one, I'm not surprised or mad that DC pulled off her this book. I don't know whether there was editorial interference, personal issues, or what, but once Simone killed off a villain and had the GCPD hunting Batgirl, her run never recovered. The Strix character was kind of interesting but also too similar to the Cassandra Cain Batgirl to feel fresh. The Gothtopia issue that opens the volume is one of the best Gothtopia stories, but that whole event was poorly conceived, and lazily explained in some of the books, not explained at all in others.

My main issue was the villain of the main story, Silver, was a slightly interesting character for DC comics but the wrong foil for Batgirl and Strix. A child abduction story featuring a villain who believes all the Batfamily are vampires, and that they killed his mother has to be really well written to work. That was not the case in this. It wasn't awful until the end of the story, though, which was incredibly stupid, completely discordant with the rest of Simone's run and seems to be a gateway to [a:Marguerite Bennett|7265145|Marguerite Bennett|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1460847872p2/7265145.jpg]'s terrible "supernatural" run on Batgirl.

I recommend pretending Simone's run ended after volume three. While this is, at least, an improvement on volume four, it's still kind of depressing to see Simone's story completely fall apart.
