This is a rough one to review because honestly I quite liked this if it had a different main character. I could not stand Molly. She read like such a charicature of a neuro-divergent person rather than like an actual human being. On top of that she is very principled, and expects every other person in the universe to act to her moral standings except her. The amount of times she calls someone a bad person for doing something she just did herself was so incredibly frustrating. On top of that she had a tendency to go into situations with a certain way of how she thinks things should go or be, and then twists everything that happens to fit her delusional ideas instead of actually adjusting to what is really happening. The author excuses that by saying she just 'doesn't always understand what's going on' but in reality it just read like just lives in delusions and refuses to live in reality. Again, this made for such an incredibly frustrating read.
The first half or so of this book had absolutely nothing happening in it. Molly was also very solitary, and therefore it was basically just her rambling in her inner monologue. It was absolutely EXHAUSTING, and I dragged my feet over reading it. However, in the second half the mystery plot kicks in much more, and we get a much larger cast of side characters. I thought the mystery was quite interesting. I also liked the way things went down. My only complaint was that I found the final reveal incredibly stupid. I also really loved the cast of side characters. They added some much needed life to this book, and I did enjoy my time reading this book much more. Molly also goes through some growth in that second half, and weirdly enough I am actually quite excited to read the sequel because of all that.
