From the Corner of the Oval by Beck Dorey-Stein
5.0
I ripped through this faster than any other memoir I've ever read. It is hilarious and heartbreaking, and I was often very concerned about Beck's personal choices. I wanted to tell her to lay off the Cape Codders a little, to stay away from that magnetic but deeply manipulative man (and it's lucky she changed people's names, because this particular Obama staffer does not come off well at all), to wear those bright colored clothes with pride, and to please try to get a bit more sleep! Then I would remember that she worked for the president, and that we all deal with stress in different ways, some of them not entirely healthy. Her perspective on world events (including school shootings) is emotional and honest, her view of the inside workings of the government is engaged and refreshing and informal (at one point she calls Obama the " baddest motherfucker in the game"), and I found myself rooting for her on every page.
