The Demon of Unrest: A Saga of Hubris, Heartbreak, and Heroism at the Dawn of the Civil War by Erik Larson

3.0

Larson’s book suffers from meandering, unnecessary details about Fort Sumter’s participants early on. It takes too long to get to the main event. Likewise at the end, the book has both an epilogue and a coda. The story of Fort Sumter is as well-written and gripping as one would expect, but it is squished between a bloated exposition and reflection.
