The Scarlet Letter
by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Honestly, I expected to dislike this. I’m struggling coming up with a rating because I really didn’t have many issues with it. The Custom House introduction is absolutely painful, but, after that point, I really can’t complain too much.
Hawthorne really likes to remind the reader about the scarlet letter…like, REALLY loves to remind you. Almost every other page we’re reminded. Additionally, there were moments where I would read a sentence and then completely forget what it said as soon as I reached the next one. Certainly, that’s a me problem, but it goes to show that there’s nothing particularly enthralling here. Nevertheless, I liked it!
I suppose there’s a nice sentiment in here. I didn’t feel strongly attached to the plot or the characters, but I can appreciate the work. A decent classic and one I would consider returning to.
