This book has one of the best opening paragraphs I've ever read - it's worth checking out for that alone.

I felt that the novel had a really strong start, and a magic system that was a lot of fun. I really loved how the consequences played out for the characters - I've never seen anything quite like this. I know that if this book were made into a film, I would absolutely adore it: the intersectional diversity is brill; there are some moments of real humour; and the way the magic is described sounds beautiful. Some of the narrative bored me a bit, but it was such a quick read that it doesn't really matter.
