It was hard to get into at the start, but I enjoyed it once it got going. I didn't know much about that part of the word and what happened during WW2 so that was fascinating. I agree with others' that some of the language was unnecessary. I found it deeply affecting until the bit where the Italian fireman (Corelli) came to rebury Carlo after the earthquake. I didn't like the ending, because I just didn't know the characters at all and thus didn't care for them. The very last paragraph was horrible. Left a nasty taste in my mouth tbh.
