Spider's Bite
by Jennifer Estep
3.5 stars
Gritty. I like.
I have high hopes for this series and these characters after reading Spider's Bite . Much less of a fantasy book than anticipated: yes, there was magic, yes, there are dwarves and vampires and giants etc., but the supernatural plays a very secondary role in this assassin-cop mystery. I expect that we'll see these fantasy elements influence the story a little more heavily as the series progresses.
I like Gin. She's interesting and badass and a bit of an antihero, in that she's sometimes scary (to the reader) and a little too ruthless to be heroic. But Estep was careful to humanize her too, I felt, especially with Catharine.
