The Sin Eater's Daughter by Melinda Salisbury

4.0

At heart, this is a dark fairy tale about Twylla, a girl whose divine powers cause her to kill with a single touch. She is kept by a wicked queen both as executioner and future monarch - for Twylla is to marry the prince. But her handsome and insightful new guard, Lief, throws everything off-course.

A couple of niggles. I didn't feel the characters were fully fleshed out at times, particularly the prince, Marek... and at various points, Twylla felt oddly passive for a heroine. (I liked Lief, though.) But first and foremore, this is a gripping and immersive story - I couldn't put it down. There are some great new ideas too (e.g. sin eating!) which lend the fantasy an unusual flavour, so to speak... Plenty of twists and turns (a couple I anticipated, but others were proper shockers) and some lovely writing too.

Book 2, please?
