JTownsend's writing really leveled up for this book!

I really in enjoyed the first book and gave it a 5/5 for it's characters, charm, and humor. It had the 2nd most strongest starts to a book, 2nd being Harry Potter. It was a fun read but some parts felt a bit slow (particularly introducing the hotel and it's inhabitants), and outside of the parts about Morrigan's and Squall's origins, overall I didn't have the 'got to read the next ch' drive like I've had with my other all time favorites. The trials were fun, A-tier/B-tier, but not S-tier.

Well, the 'got to read the next ch' drive was definitely there in the 2nd book. The 2nd book is her first time as a full-time author, and there's a significant increase in elegance in how she structured the story. better supporting characters, antagonists, locations, conflicts, mysteries; setups and payoffs.

Outside the overall writing quality, there were some particulars which I thought made the 2nd book more readable. We get to explore more of Nevermoor and the school rather than the hotel, which are way more fun and interesting. Also, in the first book, many of the supporting characters were adults, but now it's much more focused on her peers, which again is more fun to read.

The first ch was a bit slow for me, but things get fun in the 2nd ch, and keeps on getting better after that. It was around 1/3rd into the book I realized how much her writing evolved; S-tier.

I don't want to spoil anything, but if the series continues on the same path, it'll be one of the all time great epics, up there with Harry Potter and His Dark Materials.

And she's still a relatively young author; looking forward to the 3rd book and her growth in the craft.
