Magician
by Raymond E. Feist
I’d like to talk about the problems I had with this book before I go into the things I really enjoyed about it, because that largely mimics my reading experience. The issues I had were almost exclusively limited to the first half of this book, and I found that there was a great improvement as the book moved on (resulting in my overall 4-star rating).
The first half of this book reminded me very heavily of The Lord of the Rings in its structure, characters and writing style. The writing was very passive and I found it hard to connect with any of the characters. As I was reading this, I found myself recalling Terry Brooks’ Sword of Shannara (which had similar issues for me), however that changed when Magician moved into Book 2.
As soon as the characters grew to adulthood, I found them far more interesting and was able to connect with them. I think moving away from the Lord of the Rings-esque world in certain sections was a significant improvement and it helped me care more about all of the characters. I also found that the battles were more engaging (though this could be because I was more invested in the characters and their fates).
By the end of the book, I really enjoyed this reading experience and only docked a star for my feelings about the beginning of the book.
