Dumplin' by Julie Murphy

4.0

Received advanced reading copy from publisher via Baker & Taylor book supplier.

Dubbed “Dumplin’” by her beauty queen mother, Willowdean always has been comfortable with who she is and what she looks like. She isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo, a smokin’ hot basketball player. But she is surprised when he appears to like her back – and it causes her, for the first time, to question her self-worth and her appearance.

It was so refreshing to read about girls who were real sized and confident in that realness. It was so uplifting to not spend an entire book reading about a real-sized girl who was trying to lose weight and become the world’s vision of “perfect.” Every single one of the characters in this book was so genuine. I especially loved Hannah’s snarkiness, Millie’s enthusiasm, Amanda’s quiet determination – and of course, Willowdean in all her awesomeness.

An all-around refreshing read.
