The Alchemyst
by Michael Scott
I read this because my son (11j is a fan. It’s an engaging story and has an interesting cast of characters from various mythologies, with an added element of magical abilities that the teenage twin protagonists must learn to harness. I was weirdly put off by 2 aspects of this magical universe — the role of “auras” and the proposal that archaeology and paleontology are wrong and the earth is only a few thousand years old. I usually love counterfactual worlds, but these beliefs just feel too close to common fallacies in the real world. Nevertheless I’m proceeding with the series to find out what happens to Scathatch, the Flamels, Josh, and Sophie.
