This book is complicated for me. I loved the idea of a woman in the 1920’s being an undercover journalist in Chicago and essentially living a double life. I also thought the way the 1920’s were portrayed, the mix of characters and the environment / atmosphere were phenomenally written.

On the other hand, there were so many characters and most of them had flashy and shallow personalities with no depth. Nelly and Jay being the exception of this as the main characters. I wish we had been given more background and depth on Tomas as well based off things that happen later in the book. Also the synopsis notes this as an “epic love story” but Jay and Nelly have an incredibly toxic and unhealthy relationship.

Lastly, while I loved the premise and was pulled into and couldn’t put down the first 1/3 of the book, the overall length and pacing of the book killed me. It was, unnecessarily long with chapters and scenes that weren’t needed and didn’t contribute to the plot itself.
