I think what cause me the biggest issue was listening to the book on Audible. The narrators were fine but I couldn’t STAND their forced southern accents. It was abhorrent. And it made it really hard to get through the book. 

I also felt like the first 20 chapters of them being kids was unnecessary. It was almost too much back story if you will. It made it hard to picture them in their late 20s cause half the book was them being teenagers.
