Never Leave, Never Lie
by Thea Verdone
This is an amazing novel! I cursed the fact that I had to put it down to work, thankful it was a short day, so I could get back to reading it. This isn't a Gothic novel, though. The only thing you could consider gothic is the fact they live in a Victorian mansion. That's it.
This is a romance story about two men, deeply in love, but are struggling with massive issues. Alek has major trauma from his childhood, which make him think that no one will ever truly love the real him or stay. Ian has been trying to show Alek that he is deserving of love.
The author does a great job showing the struggles Alek has with his mental health journey. It isn't just a 'we made up and now I'm suddenly cured of my depression'. Glad to see that type of representation in the novel.
"...if the stories in the Bible were actually true, Alek was the snake and the apple, the devil and temptation. Alek would cast Ian out of Eden and they would both burn for it."
Trigger Warnings: depression and suicide
