The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge
4.0

I had a hard time reading this book. There were things delightful things but there were also many things that aggravated me.

Main character dead parent. Briefly mentioned and then tossed out, they had no impact whatsoever on the main character or anything else.

She is portrayed as a spoiled brain, but that idea is never followed through or developed at all. Has no bearing on this book.

The descriptions are phenomenal. One of the most engaging descriptions I've ever read.

There are some innocently cute animals or actions. Thawing any frozen heart.

Interesting prose is the use of faery references.
"Gnome-like man"
"had fairy blood in them"
"Faery horse"
Etc.

The plot takes a while to unfold itself. Maybe 45% mark?
We get the main character getting acquainted with everybody; we get the descriptions of the locations; we get discovery of new animals; we get lore and historical faery tales.

Some things don't age well.
Like the strange misogyny.
The ackward anti-French sentiment
Familial incest.

The author takes a few plot shortcuts:
Coincidences, accommodating characters, carelessness without consequences, etc.

The book is good. As long as the negative aspects doesn't distract from the good ones.
