Hummingbird Salamander
by Jeff VanderMeer
I think I just might not be the audience for Jeff VanderMeer's novels. While I find his premises intriguing, his refusal to follow through with a more traditional narrative structure is something I find frustrating. The novel's noir tone drew me in with a promise of intrigue, and while the novel delivered plenty on that, the lack of a concrete resolution ultimately left me frustrated. For those who prefer an emphasis on larger ideas concerning ecological salvation and our (perhaps nonexistent) role in that, this novel could be an appealing read. However, for those who are more narrative-driven in their reading as I am, this might wind up an ultimately unsatisfying read.
