Immortal by Morning by Lynsay Sands is a third person dual-POV paranormal romance continuation of the Argeneau series. Crispin works as a detective in Canada in a precinct full of other immortals. When he and his partner get a call to investigate a skeleton found in someone's yard, the last thing he expects is to meet his life mate, Abril, who is taking care of her boss’s dog. But someone is watching Abril and threatens her safety as Crispin tries to think of a way to explain what is happening between them.
I have not read any of the books in this series before this one. I am familiar with paranormal romance by Krelsey Cole and Gina Showalter, though, and this falls fairly neatly into my expectations of the paranormal romance subgenre. There's hints of danger and horror on top of the romance as well as life mates and immediately knowing who that person is after meeting them. It's roughly a four on the spice scale as the spicy hits are threaded throughout the entire book.
The lore here is sort of like vampires but not quite. We do get a full explanation about halfway through the book for how immortals came to be, exactly how and how not they are different from vampires, and the reason life mates are even a thing. As someone who has not read any book in the series before, I found this to be extremely helpful, but I can understand how it might be frustrating to have it all laid out for several pages for long time readers of this series.
Crispin and Abril’s relationship is contracted by Abril using a lot of slang and talking about pop culture, something Crispin isn't super familiar with, and Crispin having a close relationship with his family while Abril is fairly estranged from her parents and siblings. There's a lot for them to learn from each other even though Crispin is 2900 years old and has seen a lot of what humanity has done. There is also the high heat aspects of their relationship that comes in waves as they also try to get to know each other on a more emotional level
Content warning for depictions of sexual assault and mentions of child death
I would recommend this to fans of twists on vampire lore and readers of paranormal romance who want a lot of spice very quickly
