Shift by Hugh Howey

3.0

I read this book immediately after reading WOOL, which I loved. SHIFT is different, I really liked it overall with the background on the silos.

So, highlights IMO: First Shift. Yeah, the timeline was impressive especially for a government project, and Donald was more clueless than you would hope for a Congressman, but the general secretiveness and cause of the devastation and Troy's experience all were well done. The populating of the silos was brilliant.

Unlike a lot of readers I also liked Second Shift and Mission's story. It was my favorite part of the book. The uprising of silo 18 referenced as a long past historical event in WOOL is described, and I loved the narrative from Mission's point of view.

Those were highlights. On the disappointing side, I did not care for Third Shift at all. Solo's story was long and drawn out and served little purpose beyond describing how he survived before Juliette wandered in. But what I really disliked about Solo's story was this: he is 16 at the beginning of this story and will start shadowing in IT at 17 so presumably he's a smart guy, but some of the things he didn't know or do seemed surprising. I won't give examples to avoid spoilers, but let's just say I had to suspend a lot of disbelief around his story.
