The King Is Always Above the People: Stories
by Daniel Alarcón
Each story carried a bubbling discontent motivating generally unremarkable characters in odd settings that felt a bit eerie. There were through lines of transgenerational disappointment and trauma, particularly in father-son relationships, and the need to escape your origins only to feel rootless and unwelcome everywhere else. A good collection of stories, though the women felt faceless and insubstantial.
