I think the step-brother/step-sister enemies to lovers trope is hot. I can't help it. There's something about them being in close proximity and the forbidden that makes it so hot.
Mercy is about to be a senior in high school and has seen her mom traipse man after man in and out for her entire life. Any man that has any money can woo her mom and Mercy has to pay the price by moving again, then when the relationship fizzles she's back to playing nanny to the woman who should be taking care of her. This time is no different. Except for one small detail... her mom gets married and pregnant. Mercy is just trying to make it through her last year of high school so she can go to college as far away as possible and never come back, but the new husband has baggage as well, a son the same age as Mercy, and a daughter a few years younger. Her new step-brother, Rourke, hates her on site. He is instantly rude, condescending, hateful, and promises to make her life hell. And he succeeds. The only problem with making someone's life hell, and the other getting payback, is it's hard to hurt someone who looks so damn good and these two both have that problem. Both Mercy and Rourke have major trust issues but maybe they could at least be friends if they would ever decide to listen instead of talk.
I love Mercy! She is strong, independent, has her life figured out, and she doesn't take shit from anyone. She gives as good as she gets when it comes to Rourke and the bitches who fawn after him.
Rourke hates Mercy, there's no doubt about that, and even when he won't even admit to himself that he wants her, he sure as hell doesn't want anyone else to want her, and he's not going to let anything bad happen to her. The little cat and mouse game they play is so funny, and I was laughing out loud at some points.
If you like the high school bullies to lovers trope I think you're going to love this one. The spice is great, the writing is great, and it's an all around fun read!
