Spill Simmer Falter Wither by Sara Baume

5.0

loved it in spite of the extreme anxiety i felt while reading it. can i really be blamed, though, when the story is about a rescued, one-eyed dog, who's black, whose pet-parent is unabashedly devoted to him when this could easily be about MY rescued, one-eyed (same eye, too) black dog? the anxiety stemmed from me reading reviews about how this was not a happy story, many reviewers used the terms "tears," "sobbing," "sad" etc i was worried for "oneeye" and his fate the entire time i read...so much so that i'm now going to re-read it now that i know what happens. while the story is grim, twisted and at times heart-wrenching the writing is absolutely beautiful. i can't remember a book where i was so emotionally invested in characters, sara baume absolutely captured "devotion."
