blueberryelle 's review for:
Julie's Wolf Pack
by Wendell Minor, Jean Craighead George
adventurous
challenging
informative
I loved this series as a kid, but it is now known that a lot of the wolf studies published before this book were based on flawed research. Pack hierarchy and terms like “alpha” and “beta” are used a Lot especially in this book, but this “hierarchy” became challenged by researchers within a couple years of Julie’s Wolf Pack getting published. Reading it now, I am curious how much delivered as factual is still agreed upon by experts. It was definitely frustrating to hear the phrase “I am the alpha” quite so often when that ideology of pack organization is now outdated.
I’m on the fence about whether kids should still be reading this- on the one hand, it’s great to get kids interested in wild animals, and learn about them, but on the other hand some (at least the pack hierarchy described in the book) is outdated/ flawed.
