Spoilerdiscussions of past experiences of sexism and racism, sex

I was so excited to read this book – the premise sounded great, the tropes were ones I normally love and the Brazilian American rep was a huge selling point. These would amazing to read about, if the writing hadn’t been quite so flat. I didn’t root for the couple – they didn't have the chemistry needed to pull off a trope like enemies to lovers, and Lena’s animosity seemed way too petty at times. There was also some quite cringeworthy humor. It might be an asexual thing, but I really don’t find a guy shaking his dick like a pendulum funny.

The book’s not completely bad – it tries to talk about some issues like the sexist and racist behavior Lina’s faced in her past workplace, and I find there themes important to explore. Also, the relationships Lina has with her family was sort of endearing.

If you chose to check the book out I’d recommend against listening to it on audiobook – Lina’s narrator was good, but the guy who read Max’s chapters was really bad.
