I freely admit that I like 'popular history'. Stuff that informs but doesn't require too much pre-knowledge. This was a very interesting read that charted the rise of Western Egyptology (with a fascinating glimpse of the underlying political backgrounds). There were most definitely many dodgy going ons (pillaging under the pretense that 'they were only preserving it honest!') Having said that, it was truly interesting to see all those contributing to the translation of the language, those who decided that when they dug without permission it was totally different to grave robbing!
It was also interesting to see how over time (like in many fields) while initially discoveries were able to be made by 'dabblers', as more rigor is applied it shifts to professionals. I will say though that some of the early archeologists were characters (like Petrie).
This wasn't a keeper only in that it was supposed to be a present for my father (yes, I get my love of this kind of book honestly)
