I can see why this book is considered a classic. The world building is incredible, Orwell managed to take realworld issues, the dangers of totalitarism and the political climate of the 1940s, crak them and create one of the best and most memorable dystopian novels I've ever read.
I loved the somewhat ambiguous ending, is it just Winston who was broken or is there really no hope for change?
One of the only negative points for me is that the characters felt a bit flat sometimes, nobody besides Winston Smith seems to have any goals/motivations or a personality. Also the torture scenes felt overly long and, at times, took the focus away from the more political commentary.
Some themes are still very relevant today. While reading I often had to remind myself that this book was written before the age of smartphones, social media, constantly being online, AI and fake news. The way Orwell explores surveillance, propaganda, and the control of information feels eerily familiar.
